As the winter chill sets in, I’ve learned that caring for my skin is more important than ever. The biting winds and dry indoor heating can wreak havoc on my complexion, leaving it feeling parched and lacklustre. Over the years, I’ve developed a winter skincare routine that keeps my skin hydrated and glowing, even in the coldest months. Here are my six steps to keep your skin looking its best during winter.
Step 1: Gentle Cleanser
I start my winter skincare routine with a gentle, hydrating cleanser. During the colder months, I switch away from my foaming cleansers, which can be too stripping, and opt for something creamier. I love using a milky cleanser because it feels soothing and helps to retain moisture in my skin. I also incorporate an oil cleanser or a balm as part of my double cleanse routine; it removes makeup and impurities without drying my skin. This milky and oil cleanser combination ensures my skin is clean and hydrated. Currently, I am using the Lumene Oat Milk Cleanser.
Step 2: Exfoliate
Exfoliation is key to keeping my skin healthy, but I’m careful not to go overboard in winter. I usually stick to AHA or BHA products, or sometimes skin peels, using them once a week. This helps me slough away dead skin cells without the roughness of physical scrubs. However, I’ve adjusted my routine because I tend to get dry skin patches more frequently when it’s colder. I also love my at-home hydrafacial device; I add hyaluronic acid serum to water and use this to exfoliate my skin, which removes dead skin and hydrates it. The result is smoother, brighter skin while maintaining the barrier protecting against the cold. Finding the right balance is crucial during winter.
Step 3: Toner
In the winter, I switch to using a salicylic acid toner. It helps to keep my pores clear and prevents breakouts, even when the air is dry. I appreciate that it balances my skin without stripping it of moisture. It’s a great way to ensure my skin stays clear and healthy during the colder months.
Step 3: Brightening Serums
Before applying my moisturiser, I incorporate serums into my routine. Lately, I’ve been using many vitamin C products to help brighten my skin. Vitamin C is fantastic for its antioxidant properties and can give my complexion that extra glow. I apply a few drops and gently pat it on my skin, allowing it to absorb fully before moving on to the moisturiser. Additionally, I’ve been using Matrixyl and Argireline as part of my serum lineup. They’re great for reducing the appearance of fine lines, but I have to be careful when applying them to ensure I get the full benefits.
Step 4: Nourishing Moisturiser
In winter, I opt for products that focus on skin barrier protection to protect my skin from harsh elements. I’ve discovered that formulations containing ingredients like niacinamide, panthenol, and specialised oils strengthen the skin’s natural barrier and prevent moisture loss.
Step 5: Red Light Therapy
I use a red light therapy mask three times a week to help promote skin rejuvenation and enhance my overall complexion. It’s been a fantastic addition to my skincare routine, providing a boost in radiance and helping to reduce any signs of ageing.
Step 6: Sun Protection (Yes, Even in Winter!)
Lastly, I never skip sunscreen, no matter the season. UV rays can still be harmful during winter, especially with the gloomy, overcast days we often have here in the UK. I opt for a broad-spectrum SPF that works well under my make-up or independently. Protecting my skin from long-term damage while keeping it hydrated is crucial.
With these six simple steps, I’ve kept my skin feeling supple and fresh. The key is to listen to your skin and adapt your routine based on how it feels. Hydration is paramount, and with the right products, I can enjoy the beauty of winter without sacrificing my skincare.
